Paesaggio Sicilia

Tour Operator

Paesaggio Sicilia Tour Operator is a team of people with a wide knowledge of Sicily and a great passion for its people, landscapes, culture, history, culinary traditions, agriculture and oenology.
The fil rouge of all our programmes is the personal contact with local people, culture and traditions. We organise wine and food programmes to visit the most traditional and creative wineries and to experience the daily life of rural enterprises.
We offer small group tours, tailor made programmes and private tours for those travellers who want to discover the most beautiful regions of Sicily, moving at nature’s pace in the respect of local culture and environment, travelling freely but discretely in those areas off the most beaten tourist tracks.

Sicily has an average annual wine production ranking between the second and third position among the Italian regions. But what makes Sicily a very significant area for the wine production are the several varieties of native grapes and the dramatic climate and geological differences of the wine production areas which have resulted in twenty-two DOCs and one DOGC. Autochthonous grapes grow in the volcanic soil up in the snowy volcano Etna, in the lush Aeolian island of Salina or ripe in the southern coast of Sicily constantly exposed to the warm African breezes.
With the highest number of organic farms in the whole country, Sicily is perhaps the most eclectic and interesting farming region of Italy. The outstanding quality of our PDO olive oil, durum wheat, cheese, citrus, almonds, cappers, vegetables, herbs and the generous sea provide the fundamental ingredients for our century long excellent culinary traditions.

Western Sicily is the geological and historical bridge between Europe and Africa, the melting pot of Sicilian and North African cultures. In the province of Trapani, with more acres planted to vine than any other province in Italy, some of the best Sicilian wines are produced using autochthonous grape varieties such as pignatello, grillo or catarratto that ripen exposed to the warm breezes blowing from Sahara.
This exotic tour will take you to visit selected wineries and try their exceptional DOC Marsala (1st Italian DOC) and the native red and white wines of Western Sicily. You will walk among Greek temples, cook cuscus, traditional dish for special days in the province of Trapani and enjoy the friendly and relaxing hospitality of a “baglio”, a charming rural accommodation and excellent family winery with an impressive collection of old Marsala “perpetual” wines.

Some of the highlights of this tour

• Visits and tastings at four wineries
• Walk through the medieval town in Erice
• Guided tour of the Selinunte archaeological park
• Aperitivo at the sunset on the saltpans in Marsala
• Cous cous experience
• Exclusive perpetuo wine tasting in Marsala
• special pizza experience in Trapani
Day 1
Meeting with the participants at the airport of Palermo Punta Raisi and transfer by minibus to the “baglio”. After check in there will be time to discuss the programme, wander around the vineyards, swim in the hotel pool with a breathe-taking view of the Stagnone islands near Marsala or indulge with a glass of wine before enjoying the first traditional Sicilian dinner. The owner of the estate is an oenologist with a great passion for native grapes and the history of Marsala wines and he will offer you the privilege of a visit to his special and exclusive cellar of “perpetuo” wines, collected to save the memory of the old traditions.

Day 2
Just after breakfast, you will visit the farm and put your hands into the durum wheat flour to prepare the traditional cuscus, typical dish for all special days in Trapani area, strong connection with the Southern coasts of the Mediterranean.
After lunch, we will move to a small and charming winery in the territory of Marsala: their Marsala DOC wines, wisely aged following the soleras method, are probably the best examples of this style and beside them you will also be able to try their excellent white, red and sparkling wines.
Before going back to dinner in your “Baglio”, we will stop for a walk and an aperitivo at the salt pans of Marsala, where you can see active windmills and understand more about the sea salt production.

Day 3
A wine tour of Marsala is not complete without paying a visit to one of the huge cellars that, from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20thcentury, have made Marsala wines famous all around the world. We will visit the astonishing cellars of the Florio wineries where more than 5 million litres of Marsala wine age in gigantic barrels. We will then move to the elegant city centre of Marsala, visit the fish market and grab some local street food from some of the many little food shops and bars situated in the lively cobbled stone streets.
Erice, perched on top of the on the 717 m high Mt San Giuliano, with its medieval streets, monasteries, churches and traditional confectioneries is the second stop of our journey across the province of Trapani. You will have time to stroll around, try the renowned local cakes and enjoy the beautiful views of the city of Trapani, the salt pans landscape and the Aegadian Islands.
An informal and surprisingly good pizza in Trapani will close this very long day.

Day 4
On this forth day you will discover two iconic monuments of Sicily: the archaeological site of Selinunte and the Planeta winery!
Planeta is a benchmark of the Sicilian oenology and we will visit one of their six wineries. Each winery is strongly tight to the territory and produces different wines. You will be able to try the wines produced in that area but also other DOC wines from other different Planeta estates (Etna, Noto etc).
The second monumental experience is the archaeological park of Selinunte: here with a licensed guide you will visit the temples and the ruins of the ancient Greek city and enjoy the breathe-taking view of the blue Sicilian Channel.
Back to the hotel there will be still time for a short swim in the pool before another good dinner with Western Sicilian specialities.
